With so few roads, getting around Alaska requires a bit of creativity. This was a fine idea introduced to us by our friend Jeff Hoke – a round trip that involved trains one way and a mild whitewater SUP the other way. In the middle we got to paddle around icebergs in a glacial lake. Not a bad way to spend a sunny day in Alaska!

The making of Alaskan Birch Syrup
As it drips from the tree, 50 gallons of Maple sap will produce one gallon of syrup. in Homer, Alaska this spring Jake Beaudoin has had to evaporate 160 gallons of birch sap to produce a single gallon of the precious Birch syrup. That’s a lot of evaporating. (more…)

Shooting the first ever Cineflex and RED EPIC combo
For the last year I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to receive training on operating the Cineflex system. For those of you that aren’t camera technology geeks – the cineflex is an incredibly advanced camera contraption (gimbal) that uses gyros to sense movement and then stabilizes the camera and lens housed inside it. The cineflex is most often used for shooting ultra smooth aerial video – think Planet Earth series, or for snowboard fans – Art of Flight. More on this technology coming in another post. Nordic skiing with baby in tow
It’s been a particularly strange winter here in Southcentral Alaska. January in Homer was the warmest on record according to NOAA. Our yard at home was green grass for the month and there wasn’t a piece of ice or snow in the neighborhood. It seems like winter is back with a few days with fresh snow adding up and more coming down right now. Just perfect if you ask me, we had a little mini summer vacation in the middle of winter. Now the days are getting noticeable longer and the bright sun reflecting off this fresh snow is magical. (more…)
