With so few roads, getting around Alaska requires a bit of creativity. This was a fine idea introduced to us by our friend Jeff Hoke – a round trip that involved trains one way and a mild whitewater SUP the other way. In the middle we got to paddle around icebergs in a glacial lake. Not a bad way to spend a sunny day in Alaska!
It’s been a particularly strange winter here in Southcentral Alaska. January in Homer was the warmest on record according to NOAA. Our yard at home was green grass for the month and there wasn’t a piece of ice or snow in the neighborhood. It seems like winter is back with a few days with fresh snow adding up and more coming down right now. Just perfect if you ask me, we had a little mini summer vacation in the middle of winter. Now the days are getting noticeable longer and the bright sun reflecting off this fresh snow is magical. (more…)
What does it mean to ‘live life Alaskan?’ The first thing about being an Alaskan is you have to break your own trail. To live the Alaskan life is really to live your own life, in your own way, on your own terms. To each his own. This opportunity to stake out your own claim on life is what brought many to Alaska, and what keeps the rest like me from leaving. (more…)
You’ve probably been wondering what this fat biking thing is all about. I have been. Maybe you’ve had a friend or two suddenly contract an obsession with riding this silly looking bike with oversized tires all the time, and everywhere. The way it spreads through a community had me worried that it might be contagious. (more…)
