    Filming for Patagonia Wetsuits

The clothing and outdoors brand/religion known as patagonia just released their 2014 wetsuit guide video. Patagonia surf ambassadors Chris and Keith Malloy’s recent trip to Alaska is featured with footage by Scott Dickerson. Check it out.

This project was special for us on several levels. For one thing it was an opportunity for Scott to showcase that his talents aren’t only in still photography. It also gave us another chance to show new friends how we have fun in Alaska –  on a great surf trip with Ocean Swell Ventures on the M/V Milo. The timing just worked out such that our friend Daniel Zatz of Zatzworks was in the area shooting cineflex aerials and was kind enough to get a few shots for this project as well.

We are proud to count many Patagonia ambassadors as our friends – they are some of the most enjoyable folks in the industry that we’ve gotten to know.

Stay tuned for the report from Scott’s most recent Patagonia shoot in Alaska with kitesurfing ambassador Jason Slezak.

Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2013

Just wanted to post a quick note to share our excitement and pride at one of Scott’s images being chosen as one of the top 50 images in Red Bull’s Illume Image Quest 2013. This contest hasn’t happened since 2010 and the caliber of photographers and athletes featured is staggering.

Aerial view of stand up paddlesurfing the Turnagain Arm boretide in Cook Inlet, Alaska. Eric Newberry, Dave Calkins, and Mike McCune rode the wave caused by the incoming tide for up to five miles on their standup paddleboards.

This photo was the result of Scott’s passion for surfing, aerial perspectives and pioneering surf in Alaska coming together on a magically beautiful morning to be photographing from his paramotor. (more…)

    #tbt: Outside Television ‘Surfs’ Alaska

Inspired by Instagram’s Throwback Thursday trend, here is one from the SDP archives. The other day I started flipping through a stack of old magazines from a friend and opened right up to this quintessential Homer surf scene. It made for a fun surprise! Here Mike McCune surfs Alaska for Outside Television in a photo licensed by Aurora Photos, one of our stock agents. From Outside Magazine, February 2012.

das ist cool! Alaska im Winter: Adventure and Surf

We’ve had what seems like a lot of German attention lately, and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated it!

Early this winter we were visited by filmmaker Sabrina Hermsen and her crew from ZDF (the German equivalent of PBS, we understand). We had a lot of fun showing them around and managed to get some surf when by all standards there really wasn’t any.

This German TV episode features us and Surf Alaska.  Our appearance begins at 5:47.

In this longer episode Mike McCune of Ocean Swell Ventures and the M/V Milo are featured as well, although the surf is noticeably missing. We’re only sorry they didn’t include the post session feast, standard fare on the Milo, that we shared with them. Check it out, starting at 6:49.

Oh yeah, we also wish we knew what they are saying about us!  Did you hear anyone say ‘der spinnt’ (he’s nuts!)?

This fall we were also showing up in German print:

On a more traditional front, Scott’s ever popular aerial bore tide surf shot was featured as a double page spread in a German magazine, Fit for Fun.

And another one that we really wish we could read: a super-cool looking book about Stand-Up Paddling published several SDP photos, including one of Scott surfing (taken by yours truly!).

Yes, this means that Scott is surfing in a book that has Laird Hamilton on the cover.

  • Bristol Bay Photo Exhibit

I’m honored to announce the opening of a collaborative art exhibit between my favorite sculpturist, Maygen Jannetta, and myself. The opening celebration is 5-7pm Friday, April 15th at the Pratt Museum in Homer, Alaska. If you can’t join us then, don’t worry the exhibit will be on display until June 26th, 2011.

I’ll post some more photos and background on this project shortly, for now here is my artist statement for the exhibit:

Bristol Bay is an expansive region that encompasses a remarkable variety of ecosystems. This natural diversity sustains an unfathomable abundance of wildlife. I consider myself one of a fortunate few to have glimpsed a small slice of the natural wonders in this region.

Bristol Bay cradles innumerable stories of nature alive in its most primal form. Of particular interest to me is the way that humans are finding their place in this meshwork of life.  My desire is that viewing the photographs and sculptures will give you an opportunity to develop your own personal connection with the Bristol Bay region.

In composing photographs I aspire to share a compelling story in an artistic way. I hope the images entice your attention and share with you their stories.

I would like to thank Maygen for inviting me to share this exhibit with her, I’m honored to show my photographs alongside her sculptures. These  images could not have been created without the help of countless friends during my visits to Bristol Bay, thank you. A special thanks to my friend and pilot Brad Heil whom I’ve shared well over 100 hours of airtime with in Bristol Bay. He was always willing to go back around one more time for the another shot.

Thanks to the World Wildlife Fund for their ongoing efforts to preserve the natural, cultural and economic heritage of Bristol Bay in sensible and practical ways. And, for their much appreciated financial help framing the photographs.
